Critique: Road Signs

Road signs always look better over the shoulder by Chris Vandenberg

I like the texture of the weathered paint on the sign. It gives me a feeling that I could feel all the cracks and bumps. I also like the plain black background and the negative space, gives the sign all the attention.

The only thing that this piece really needs is some dodging the left side of the sign to give it a nice highlight. This photo has lots a dark and lots of mid tons but lacks the light range. This piece need the dynamic range of shades. It would bring out the textures even more.

Over all strong piece.

Critique:Christmas Lights

Christmas Lights by Chris Vandenberg

The lighting feels natural and has a nice glow against the wood, as some of the light colors are mixing.The first blue light has some haloing effect (outline glow that doesn’t look natural) and some overexposure. Also I don’t know what the main focus is. There are 3 points of interest to me. The blue light in the front, the cluster of lights in the middle and the dim lights in the background. This photo would befit from a new more focused composition. Example just focusing on the cluster of lights, or focusing on one light with all the background lights out of focus.

Interview with Gee-gina

Q: When did you first starting taking photos?

A: I’ve been interested in photography since I was about 14/15, but I only got properly into photography about 1-2 years ago, when I received my first SLR camera.

Q: Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW I’m Freaking AWESOME !?

A: Haha, um, it’s only recently that i’ve started to like my work alot, i’ve never thought my work was amazing as i’ll always aspire to be better. The first photograph i took recently that made me think, I need to continue taking photos like this, would probably be [link]

Q: Does your personality change when your behind the camera ?

A: A little, but I wouldn’t say it was a dramatic change. I become a little more outgoing as I tend to demonstrate the pose in which I want the model to stand and I also like to try to be as friendly as I can to make the model feel comfortable.

Q: Whats your inspiration for your photos ?

A: Other photographers work inspires me as I’m sure it does most people. But also, clothing inspires me a great deal too. If I see an outfit or plan what the model is going to wear, I can see the scene and pose I need to put them in.

Q: What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

A: Anyone who is willing to model for me when I ask. I’ve always enjoyed working with people, I feel as though I can make my ideas far more realistic when someone else acts them out in front of the lens.

Q: What is something that you would love to shoot that you haven’t had the chance to?

A: A famous model, such as Daisy Lowe. She puts across such energy in her photographs and I would love to portray this in my own work.

Q:Which of your works are you the most proud of?

A: I think I’m most proud of this image overall, [link] but by the favourites on my work, people seem to prefer my self portrait work.

Q: Have any photography tips?

A: enjoy it! if you don’t have a passion or love for photography, you won’t produce the images and outcomes you have in your head. Also, never compare yourself to someone else, everyone has their own style and way of doing things!

Q: What program do you use to edit your photos in ?

A: Photoshop CS3.

Quick tip on built-in flash

If you don’t have external flash put tape on a small piece of paper/ any other kind of translucent material over the inbuilt flash. This will act as a diffuser and soften the light. Now your when you use flash it won’t look like some kids myspace picture.

Quick Zoom Tip

Always always stick with optical zoom. Digital zoom is fake, check your settings to turn this feature off if you haven’t already. All that digital zoom is doing is cropping the picture in camera to make it look a liked it zoomed.
